Bio:

Thanatos

"For, alone of gods, Thanatos loves not gifts; no, not by sacrifice, nor by libation, canst thou aught avail with him; he hath no altar nor hath he hymn of praise; from him, alone of gods, Peitho stands aloof."

Mortal Alias:

Death does not attempt to live a dual life. He is what he is. Mortal people usually don't see him because he is usually physically between worlds, so they don't see him unless they are at the point of death. He can usually go anywhere and do anything on the mortal plane without being noticed. He does however have a disadvantage when he wants someone to serve him coffee at a restaurant.

He was known by the Romans as: Mors & Letus

Age and Physical Description:

Thanatos is one of the eldest immortal gods, but ever remains in appearance perpetually young and ageless with an androgynous visage. He is willowy and thin but well toned underneath his clothing and of a solid body when occupying the same metaphysical space as another being but usually between worlds and transparent. He is relatively tall, standing at 6' 3, still towering over the majority of mortals and possessing of massive wings that are usually hidden under dark robes when he is in the Underworld. He has the ability to change or hide his wings. The wings change according to the role he takes when he approaches a soul. The wings can either look angelic and soft when he takes on the role of a gentle and comforting Death or demonic and draconian when he takes on the role of a cold and cruel Death. The role he takes depends on how he is received and sometimes whether the person's soul he is collecting leans more toward positive or negative forces determined by the person's aura when they are passing. Thanatos has a pale complexion that at times radiates a soft glow. He has dark hair that usually appears darker than what it is due to his light complexion. He has dark eyes that are like a vacuuming abyss. Thanatos' lips take on a hue of blue at times which appears as if he wears lipstick, this is the actual color of his lips indicating how frigid that Death is, however, his lips can take on a warmer color when he is warmed by some external source. </strike>

Personality:

Pros: brave, noble, elegant, intelligent, altruistic, quirky sense of humor, usually kind when people are kind to him, respectful, neutral.

Cons: a worrier, frigid, workaholic, quirky sense of humor, wants to believe in everyone's innate goodness, habitual.

Likes and Dislikes:

Likes: life, graveyards, the soul and spirit of a thing, to comfort others, laughter, music, to sing, animals (especially moths, butterflies, and penguins), the young and those who are vigorous, Halloween, velvet, leather, sheer fabric, chocolate, reading, poetry, drawing, movies, coffee, learning, liquids, rain, thunderstorms.

Dislikes: cruelty for cruelty's sake, pigheadedness, cowards, confusion, those who try to buy him or negotiate a deal with him, those who would keep him from his tasks, materialism.

Sexuality:

Thanatos is usually an asexual being, possibly created by the trauma of robbing the first mortal being he was fascinated with of life with a kiss. Because of this it is impossible for him to take a mortal lover without taking them away from their life and he is usually responsible enough to silence his own desires for the welfare of others. While he is quite possible of being intimate with a shade, he usually withstands from doing such, finding little joy in lust. Whereas gender is concerned he does not discriminate, but he has tended to lean more toward males having slightly more male than female lovers within the lengthy span of his existence. It is very rare for him to take a lover and he has not known love with the intensity others have.

History:

Thanatos is a creature of duty first and foremost, a tool of The Fates. He does not judge or discriminate against a soul he takes, but only prepares himself for what is expected in reaction. Before he indulges in anything that he wants to do, and even most of the time when he is doing something he wants to do, he is working on autopilot to fulfill his function. Thanatos has a few different weapons ( an amulet he wears around his neck, a sword, two daggers, and a scythe) although he doesn't need them to collect souls, the weapons are useful for both ceremonial purposes and for when he has had to fight or defend himself against those who would attack him or souls that would elude him. The amulet was a gift from his mother Nyx given to him when he was just a child and has the ability to physically veil a god from another god. The Darkness gifted him with his sword when he came of age and rumor of wars began. The two daggers were gifts from Hades when The Olympian dynasty began and the Stygians came under their rule, and the daggers original function were ceremonial in purpose, to cut a lock of hair in dedication of the life sacrifice, adding to the wealth and glory of Hades. The scythe usually stays in Thanatos' closet these days unused, although it acts as a key to a door better left shut where Thanatos used to temporary store souls before things became more structured.

There was a time when Thanatos was young that he served no one but Fate, and then came a time for other gods who desired to create more and have power over that which was created and that which already existed leading into battles and wars. After all the wars, a new empire arose for Death to serve. Being that this was the will of Fate, he did not contest it. Since then he has claimed those that were fated, collected their souls on Earth and delivered them to the banks of Styx where they make their afterlife journey after being judged.

His loyalties were to the the three Olympian kings, but before them he will always remain first and foremost a servant of Fate. Since the coup he has remained calm but callous and tried to keep the rest of the Underworld denizens from acting too hastily one way or another until more knowledge is gained.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths: Strong, Honest with Discretion, Independent, Resourceful, Cunning, A Somewhat Good Advisor, Slow to Anger.

Weaknesses: Trusting To A Fault, Gives The Benefit Of A Doubt, Can Be Tricked, Emotionally Distant, Timid, Slow to Anger, Childless (Fruit does not come from barren trees.)

General Deity Canon

Thanatos is the personification of Death. Son of Nyx. His best known myth is the myth of Sisyphus and how the tricky mortal was able to capture Thanatos to elude Death and trick Hades into going back to the land of the living after his Death. A good deal of his myths involving Apollo, Hercules, and others can be read here

Noteworthy Friends and Family Game Canon:

The Underworlders: Most of those who live in the Underworld have close blood ties to Thanatos with a few exceptions and the shades.

Nyx and The Darkness: Thanatos' parents.

Hypnos: One of Thanatos' closest brothers and twin. In myth is it said they shared a cave for a time.

Styx: One of Thanatos' sisters.

Morpheus: Thanatos' nephew and leader of the Dreams. Thanatos likes his nephew.

The Fates: The ones he is subject too.

Moros: The Dark Fate. Moros is Thanatos' brother and they get along for the most part.

Hades and Persephone: King and Queen of the Underworld until lately.

Ares: God of War, freed Death when Death was captured by Sisyphus.

Hermes: When Hermes was young he was Thanatos' apprentice and later lover. Thanatos cares a great deal about Hermes.

Zelos: Son of Styx and Thanatos' nephew.

Apollo and Hercules: Angered Thanatos over the mortals Alcestis and Admetos when Apollo threated their deaths. Hercules strength subdued Thanatos and kept him from taking Alcestis when Apollo stepped in to save Admetos from his fated death and Alcestis was promised in Admetos' place. Death was not happy.

Stewart Townsend?

I am not Stewart Townsend.

I envision this interpretation of Thanatos as somewhat resembling the way Stewart Townsend looked in Queen of the Damn with the exceptions that my vision is paler, has a darker shade of hair, darker shade of iris, has wings when his body isn't hidden under his thick black robes and his lips are often as blue as if he wore lipstick, which he doesn't by the way. This interpretation of Thanatos began a few years back in the defunct Livejournal community called Deities Dot Com using the LJ journal Swift_Wings. When I was trying to think of a face for Thanatos I was thinking of using Johnny Depp initially, because Thanatos is a little quirky at times, especially his sense of humor, but I was sold on Stewart because of how damn seducing he is QOTD. The actor's look was very lovely in that movie and I view Thanatos as being as lovely. I am of the thought that Death should have an alluring aspect so that when he arrives to take souls he doesn't have to fight with all of them, even if he is a being of immense power.

Disclaimer/Warning: This is the journal of the God of Death and my interpretation of him. Thanatos is a character played in [info]mount_olympus and this journal may or may not contain both explicit content and innuendo.

"I've always had a fondness for the art mortals render."

"I'm glorious death! You will all meet me or one of those like me in the near future, so prepare yourselves. I'm quite breath taking."
