A wish...
Death should have left Olympus entirely after speaking to Hermes and being brushed off for the unappreciated action he took to help his friend, and yet a part of him lingered. He lingered because he continued to fret over the condition of the messenger, possibly because even after all of these eons he still felt responsible for Hermes.

While toiling between Olympus and the Underworld, another set of his eyes stared into the cascading waters of the massive fountain that was located center courtyard Olympus. Perched atop of the stature his carrion bird gaze dove the depths of the fountain for discarded wishes in the forms of golden coins.

Hermes had a usual bounce to his step, even if his eyes were cloudy with annoyance. He was preoccupied with thoughts about Kratos, and Harmonia...and really how to keep the girl out of more trouble. However, she was very much as stubborn as her father was hot-headed.

It was in his preoccupation that he nearly missed the Raven that sat so still upon the fountain. And really, he should have kept walking (for he really had nothing to really say to Thanatos, more so given that he mood had improved so very little), but he stopped and stared at the ground for a moment...

Before slowly turning and looking at Thanatos Carefully, "I thought you'd left The Mount, Thanatos."

The figure exiting the King and Queen's temple did catch his vigilant eyes. His dark eyes followed the path of the messenger and almost thought Hermes did not recognize him as he was in this form before he turned.

He cawed, although to Hermes the cries of the bird would have been understood perfectly: "I couldn't. I have displeased you..."

"If displeasing me were reason enough for the world to cease in it's workings, Thanatos, long ago everyone would have crumpled to dust from inactivity. My mood was not the result of you...but simple not improved by your helpful hand."

Hermes tried hard to affect the nature of someone carring within them some sympathy for the other's pain...But in this moment, he imagined it feel short of being all that sumpathic.

"You did what you thought was needed to assure that I sought out Aphrodite. And that I have, and gained in some small amount, her forgiveness. And for that I do, indeed, have you to thank for no small measure...though, indeed, I would enjoy the chance to sleep sometime soon...and hope my mood better improved upon my waking."

The statuesque form of the bird hopped from its perch, and used its wings to glide toward the base of the marble fountain. He lifted his head in Hermes' direction, "I can speak with Hypnos. Tell him that the problem is no more..."

"How very kind of you, Sweet Death, and I humbly thank you for that."

Hermes contemplated turning and walking on at that point...but Thanatos still seemed, rather...distressed.

"Why do you worry so much over my displeasure, Death? I am but an impertinent child, who knows no better than to kick and scream when things are not given to him in a manner he desires. My pleasure is rarely the concern of others, so why then should it still be yours?"

"Why shouldn't it still be of my concern? You are my friend. The mortals have a saying I am fond of that goes something like," Thanatos took a pause to morph from the small feather covered bird body into the incarnation that Hermes was more accustomed to. "You can't pick the family you are born into, but you can pick your friends."

Sitting on the ground, a pile of loose dark robes he inquired curiously, "And you? Are still mine?"

"Of course I am your friend, Thanatos." Hermes said, moving slowly toward the pale god. "I've just got a lot on my mind. That's all..."

He shrugged as he took a seat next to Thanatos, staring off into the distance.

"Things...aren't the way they used to be, though. A lot has changed...just in the course of a year alone. Makes a god think a lot more than he used to."

"What do you mean? That Zeus is back in power? Sure...That's normal. But history...."

Hermes cut off and shook his head, before glancing at Thanatos.

"When it all comes to a head, I just wonder who will be standing next to who in the end, and are the friendships of gods really able to stand the test of time."

Slanting his head curiously to the side he searched Hermes eyes, wondering what has brought this on?

"In the end?"

What was he trying to say?

"Who is to stand? My friend, you speak as if there will be an end? If there is ever a real end then who will be left standing? What survives in the end? Nothing. That is why it is the end. In the end all becomes history..."

What was disconcerting was the manner in which Hermes spoke of friendships?

"What friendships worry you of standing the test of time? If you are worried about your father's throne? The head of a pantheon is far from the...end."

"Your father will have to worry for his position until he eliminates the threat to it, but he understands from the previous actions of his own father that prophecy can be self-fulfilled. And there has been no prophecy as of yet spoken by either oracle or fate proclaiming that Zeus will lose his lordship. While it has slipped from his fingers, the moment he had fingers again he grasped a firm hold of it which has not been done before by any of his predecessors. Remember that my friend."

Hermes frowned, and spared a side long glance at Thanatos before suddenly finding that the grass was so very interesting in the moment.

"Over confidence is the death of us all, isn't it? What if...what if it is something he doesn't suspect that comes at him? He returned to his throne once...can he do it twice? Three times?"

Hermes shook his head, and made a face. He shouldn't risk discussing this particular idea with others, but then...Thanatos was not likely to discuss Hermes odd behavoir with Zeus, nor Zeus with Thanatos.

"The Age of Kings has passed, Thanatos...It really is only a matter of time, isn't it?"

"Over confidence is not the death of all Hermes. Those with none, die same as those with. I think I can claim that those like me do not discriminate. Those fated to die, Die. Be thankful you are as you are. Be thankful you can regenerate even if I Death touches you."

Thanatos nodded but pondered at Hermes squirming face, "That age has passed us by, but I am not Fate Hermes and can not speak for it. What I can say is that even if Zeus is fated to lose the kingship eventually, I doubt any will be able to hold the kingship for long without having to drastically change to keep the balance. Hypothetically speaking--- If Ares is again fated to be king, than War will have his day, but to maintain it? He will have to change, and change so significantly that one day he will not be War anymore. Another would have to be born to take his place, and then he to would be under the duress of his father."

"Let me give you something to ponder my pupil: Who was War before there was Ares? How did fighting exist without him?"

"Athena...and before her Pallas...What of it? They Athena fought with fairness and wisdom, Pallas with The Fab Four that now serve my father."

Hermes shook his head and sighed.

"And it matter little that Ares will have to change...Because Ares is ambitious enough to want to be king. I have no desire for it, Apollo would if he thought it would get him his way, Dionysos doesn't care for anything beyond his wine. Hercules lacks the brain funcution to be king...So, you know...That really only leaves the one that wants it the most. And, good for him...he can look of his shoulder for endless lifetimes wondering which of his kids will destroy him....The point is, History repeats itself. As was the fate of the father so will be the son...and I don't need a collection of fallen stones to tell me that."

"What of it?"

An incredulous look at Hermes.

"There will always be a war Hermes, as long as there is someone to fight. A war among two or a war between thousands, it makes little difference except for the path of corpses it leaves in its wake. Through your father alone two very different kinds of War were conceived; just think of what is to come out of War himself when he is king? What kind of fruit will he bear to replenish the earth in?"

"My sisters and I as busy as we already are, are never be out of a task and while busy we are, imagine how busy we could be? Hades would grow stronger and richer..."

And that was possibly enough of that----

A little curve turned Thanatos lips, "But I hardly doubt there is much to worry over, Zeus or Ares on the throne, it will not matter much to a technological world of increasing free societies that has forgotten the gods.”

A swift brush of his lips against Hermes’ cheek, “And it’s been said that I fret too much. Now look at you. ”

Hermes gave Thanatos a long side look, considering it all. Thanatos didn't believe Ares would win out over Zeus? Maybe...Ares, likely could never defeat Zeus on his on, Zeus didn't trust him enough. Hermes, though...Hermes was the trusted one.

"I've heard mortals say- 'It's what I'm paid to do' - in reference to worrying. The Age of the Infromation super highway and communicantion as the touch of your fingers. Wouldn't think i'd worry about anything...but when once I was among the weakest of the 12, and now..."

Well, he really wasn't so weak and helpless any longer. Entire nations could fall at his whim...and the others would go with it. This world was a world dominated by 4 of the 12, The Two Wars, Hermes and the Lord of the Arts- Apollo. And of those 4, Hermes alone could funcution without the others....

It was, by far, a boost to his ego...But Physically, Hemes was no match for Ares' brute strenght. And Strenght and cunning were never really meant to live in the same body...How Ares got so lucky, the world may never know.

"Do you still worry that you've upset me?"

"And now you find yourself in an age that worships your qualities."

"I don't worry I've upset you, I know I have upset you. Maybe I shouldn't have asked the favor of my brother, but it was my worry for you my friend, that you fall into a long slumber and not wake up---"

Too Much Fun Makes The Green Fairy Sad...
She cupped his cold face in her hands, her eyes studying every inch of his peaceful, lifeless visage. He’d been the life of the party not 30 minutes before, smoking his joints, LSD patches…he’d been partying hard, and his friends had been lost in the madness with him.

It was a situation that begged the attention of the ultimate druggy- Pasithea.

She’d appeared, giggling madly, swinging her hands around and arms wide to greet the world. Yes, yes…the Green Fairy came to play. To play, to play! But the others had been boring. They had told Petey to stop…no more. But she didn’t want them to stop, no, no. She wanted them to play with her, her and her sights and sounds. She’d given them a playground and they had wanted to leave!

No one left her land of enchantment, not when she didn’t want them too. But they’d upset her…And she turned a vicious, hungry hallucinations on them.

Run, run, run…run little pretties. The green fairy wasn’t happy. No, no, no. The purple hippos chased the others away, but Petey stayed. Oh yes, Petey still wanted to play.

So they played, dancing with the green fairy, sharing her hits.

But then her mortal play thing fell over, laughing madly. How could he play on his back? You just couldn't do that. Curious, yes…curious she flopped down next to him, and curled against him…watching, observing.

How strange. Sleep was coming to visit? But which sleep?

He was turning blue, though his smile never faded. His glossy eyes stared blankly at the ceiling, and Pasi was left alone. Her play thing was gone. Gone, gone, gone…

“Bad little play thing…the green fairy doesn’t like to play alone…” she said softly, her own high fading away, the world of color and lights dimming. This was no fun, no fun at all.

“Pasi wants you to came back….” She murmured, her soft fingers running over his breathless lips. “Pasi doesn’t want to be alone. I don’t like being alone….”

Pasi and I, I and Pasi. They were once the same thing, yes, yes. Once, a long time ago. But then Pasi left, Pasi left and Mommy left, and I was left alone. But then Pasi and I became one again, in one manner or another, but Mommy was still sometimes not there. Mommy missed her babies, and Pasi was scared of Nightmares, and I was just confused. Very, very confused.

“I want you to come back…Mommy is afraid that nightmare will come if she sleeps. We can’t sleep. But Sleep doesn’t visit I and mommy anymore.” Maybe he would if she was all better? Better, and one again. But then she’d have to take Pasi to see nightmare….

She paled at the thought. No no no. She didn’t want to see nightmare. She wanted sleep to take nightmare away, yes! Take it away! Please, please, please no more nightmare, no more.

She didn’t want to be high anymore, She wasn’t happy. And unhappy highs were not fun…

Why wouldn’t Peter come back? Thanatos didn’t steal her play thing did he? That wouldn’t have been very nice….but then, maybe Thanatos would come play.

”Thany? Deathy?” she asked softly, curled against the mortal corpse.

Although his wife did invoke the names of other Gods who could very likely be responsible for
confiscating the life from the Goddess’ desolate plaything, it was none of them who did arrive at her side. It was a far more shriving figure who did take one knee and lay a temperatureless hand on her shoulder.

“You’re never alone, peaches.”

Hypnos brought his other arm around in front of the sorrowful girl and twisted his wrist to produce a vividly crimson flower with a dark sable center..Offering the opium gift to Pasithea, the Sleep God smiled temperately. It had been quite a time since their last encounter, but his wife remained the envisionment of loveliness, as he had expected her to....

She blinked, looking up at Hypnos then at the flower. Far be it for Pasithea to be glum for long, it never happened. She grinned widely at her husband, but then eyed him carefully.

"You took my toy!" she declared, taking the gift into her hands and grinning happily over it. "Why?"

She was trying to look stern at Hypnos, but the corners of her lips continued to curl upwards. She bit down on her lip, trying harder to hold back the giggles there were building deep within. Eventually it simply became too hard for the drugged goddess, and she gave into her happiness at seeing Sleep before her.

"I've missed you..." she said, reaching out to touch his face. Well, she had to be sure he was real.

He was indeed concrete to her touch, or as much so as he ever was.

“I assure you, my dear, I am not liable for his state.” Hoisting the man’s wrist upward and allowing gravity to plummet the limb back to the floor, Hypnos twitches a brow at the rigidity of the corpse.

“You know I would never be culpable for something so vulgar and uncouth.” Seeing a bit of confusion - or was it doubt? - on her face, Hypnos explained more clearly. “He’s dead, gorgeous. I think you played him right to Death’s door.”

Dead? But...She did that, dancing? Oh, that wasn't good. Daddy had told her over and over that she wasn't supposed to kill the pets, because a dead pet wasn't a very fun pet.

She peered at the body, and the crawled a bit closer to Hypnos. She didn't want to touch a dead thing, it might get germs or...or bugs! Dead things had bugs, and bugds were just scary.

"Pasi killed him?" She asked, concerned that she was in trouble. "I didn't mean to kill him...Petey was just having fun...and..."

She bit her lip again, looking at Hypnos much like an abashed child. "I'm sorry, did I do something bad?"

Consoling the fretting Goddess, Slumber eases his arm about her shoulders.

“Worry not, intoxicating temptress.. It is up to the Fates to discern when it is time for a mortal to leave this realm. It was no fault of yours.”

It did not matter whether or not he truly believed his own words, for this was a discussion for a far more sober time and place, not the pleasing reunion of husband and wife.

She wasn't in trouble? Oh good! Yes, yes, yes...that was good. She just wouldn't tell daddy that she killed her pet. Hypnos wouldn't tell, so Pasi wouldn't have to tell either.

"Faired? I planted a garden! I planted flowers, and muschrooms, and poppies..." she giggled a little, the dead pet already forgotten. "And they were growing so big, and everyone came to see, because Pasi had the best garden!"

Then she leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper, "But then...the bugs came." She cast a nervous look around. It was important that the bugs couldn't hear, or they might try to attack! The big boss bug was after her, she just knew it. "They ate all of my pretty flowers. And I couldn't go plant more flowers, because the bugs were waiting...."

Leaning back she looked up at him, her eyes twinkling. "But then Daddy came, and he chased the bugs aways. Yes, yes. Daddy scared the big boss bug away so I could planet my flowers and mushrooms agian."

She smiled at him, running the back of her hand down his face. "I made a new mix, do you want to try?"

She was again insisting the insects were after her? He made a mental note to ..dispose... of any crystal meth he found in her possession. It would be tragic if she clawed at her exquisite features like so many of the unfortunate humans on the drug did.

“Certainly, my dear..” Far be it from him to decline. In a somewhat backward way this was her way of being wifely, and no husband would ever abstain from a wife’s homemade cooking, or in this case drugs, if he wished for some of the other privileges of having a bride to continue regularly..

She jumped up, eager to share her new batch....only...where did she put it. She chewed on one of her nails, trying to think hard about where she'd left her drugs. This was a hazard of doing too many chemicals. Eventually, your memory was just shot...

OH! That's right, she'd left it at daddy's place, under the bar. She snapped her fingers and summoned the prize to her eagerly awaiting hands.

She grinned at her husband and nearly started to bounce in place as she pulled a lighter out and lit the joint. One, two puffs...

She looked at him with wide eyes and held it out to him, biting her bottom lip as she waited to see what he thought of her new mix. It was important that he liked it! If he didn't, then she'd have to try again, and she didn't remember where she'd left her garden.

Hmmm...Maybe daddy knew! Oh...She couldn't go ask daddy right now. No no no, she needed to play with Hypnos...

Wan fingers did clasp about the extended blend of narcotics rolled into a smokeable stick. It was most certainly always a surprise what reaction he would have, considering the tolerance his wife had accumulated over the past...thousand some years.. He inhaled deeply, taking a hit expertly off the joint, Hypnos hesitates a moment before taking another. With the right blend and potency of chemicals, even the divine could find themselves under the influence, so to speak.....so with caution, a third profound breath was taken.

And then it struck him like a truck. Vision streaked with swirling colours, Hypnos put his arm down to bolster himself up so that the dizziness did not overtake him.

Blinking rapidly, he furrowed his brow and handed the drugs back to hiswife. “Formidable, as always.”

She took it back happily, bouncing a bit as she took a slow drag. She waited a bit, then slowly exhaled, smiling as she watched the smoke curl and twist in the air. She giggled a bit more softly, looking down at her silly husband.

She dropped to her knees in front of him, eyes twinkling. Did he like it? He looked like he had been caught off gaurd, oh...was that good or bad? Ummmm, She believed it was good. It meant she had infact achieved her goals in making it stronger--not the she ever failed.

"Are you ok, Lovie?" She asked, leaning in close to inspect his face. She didn't think he could lie if she was eyeing him this closely...

She held the joint up, smiling. She took another long drag, watching him through the smoke, as she pondered his reaction. She however, it was hard to focus on his reaction. This, after all, was the closest she had been to her husband in a long time...other thoughts were dancing in the back of her mind.

The trenchant Goddess had indeed achieved her objective in increasing the puissance of the drugs, the combination sending Hypnos reeling. Fortunately he was already seated, thus not embarrassing himself by tumbling or staggering as the full effect took hold.

No where as tolerant of the hallucinogens as his wife, Sleep declined another hit, at least right away, instead returning the woman’s gaze. He smiled and nodded softly. “I’m always alright
when you’re around.” She was correct in that he could not deceive her at this proximity, not that he could at any time. Besides.....The God of Sleep need never lie. He either favoured you, or he did not. There was nothing scheming about his work; much like that of his brother’s.. Sleep and Death were a rather definite state of being.

Picking up on Pasithea’s thoughts, Hypnos breezily skimmed his eyes down the woman’s form before him. Returning his eyes to her’s with a faint smile.

She flicked the joint off to the side, not caring what became of it. She would just make more, and make it better. She licked her lips and gave Hypnos a devious smile.

She slipped her arms around his neck, and tilted her head to the side, her hair falling into her face.

"What do you do when I'm not around?" she asked, her fingers twisting around in his hair.

She pulled herself closer, her lips brushing lightly over his jaw. "Tell me?..." she whispered, her lips light catching his ear in a soft, airy kiss.

Unseen to either Pasithea or Hypnos, Death came to clip a lock of hair and take a soul, performing his task effortlessly. He was curious, but deserted it to do the polite thing and leave his brother alone with his wife after doing the job. He could only wish his sweetest brother well in this endeavor...of reclaiming his wife.
